safe sites are recognized with a small yellow padlock at the bottom of your browser, if the site doesn't display it don't buy anything. I've shopped over the net for years and never had a problem so far

Most are safe - especially the larger well known companies. Like others have said, look for the secure padlock symbol at the bottom of you screen. Most Internet sales sites will require you to sign up which means that record your name, email, etc. This supposedly makes it easier should you order again. The bigger and better stores will not sale your email, but some of the others might. If you see a box on the sign up page that says something to the matter about receiving further offerings or the like, choosing these options may get you many unwanted emails. It is up to you, but I would not choose those options.

There are many spam and scam emails going around that pretend to be banks or Internet stores informing you that your account has been inactivated or is receiving suspicious activity. The email then gives you a link to click so that you can enter your ID and Password to check your account. Never access any site requiring an Id and Password from an email. If you want to check your account, leave your email and access the site thru your browser.

Honestly, nothing is "safe" everything has down points to it. You have to be very cautious when doing anything. Look at the bottom of the web page quite a few people are certified with the Better Business Bureau, and some are anti-identity theft awarded. I would check at them bottom of the pages, click on it and make sure it takes you to the exact site. Never be to careful. If you can call the company and make sure that the number is correct and that the place sounds legit. Many scam companies don't like to be asked multiple security questions, if someone gets frustrated with you and gives you general answers don't deal with them.

I use it for big ticket items like airline tickets, However I know that there are a lot of vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

For example criminal gangs have been hacking into web sites that are storing a bunch of credit card info. The problem is not usually with the merchant cheating on the transaction but more often with poor security for their site. The safest ones are those that will do the transaction on line and give a voice phone number they use with their accounting not accessible to their on-line computer for the associated financial transaction.

Internet shopping can be 50/50 but you still have to be very safe and cautious who you are sending your Credit Card / Bank Card details too.
I now call the number and speak live to the companies before I release my card details, it is much safer that way.
I never call number to companies starting with 09, or a mobile number, it could be anywhere and anyone. I will only call a BT number or 0845 0r a 0870

Very! Padlocks work wonders. If you are dealing with a website don't deal with ones that don't give a contact page on their site.

If there's a padlock at the bottom of a secure page then it's safe.

ALWAYS pay by credit card as you'll then be covered if things go wrong.

You lot should be far more worried about banks that leave all your details in bin bags out the back! (BBC WATCHDOG)

I've bought hundreds of things online and never had a problem. The only thing you've got to watch out for is 'spyware' or similar worms that can sit in your computer, remember the numbers and passwords you type, and use it again. Get some decent antivirus to protect from this: adaware from Lavasoft & www.avast.com (both free) will do the trick.
Happy shopping!

It really depends which sites you are using, the big ones like amazon are fine but smaller unknown sites can sometimes take your money and not send you goods, also be careful on eBay because there are a lot of people out there who will rip you off.

It depends on where you're shopping. Usually places like malls, amazon.com, cell phone sites (like cingular), ebay.com... these places are most generally safe. I haven't had a bad encounter yet. If you are suspicous about a site, don't use it.

If you need answers for your homework then why don't you just ask the questions on here and someone can answer them for you?
