There was talk several years ago of contracting teams, so that the talent pool was not as thin. Since the Twins are a small market team and are not a new team, there was some discussion that the Twins might be contracted, but banned is not really the right term for what almost happened.

The Twins were lucky.. but im glad they got lucky!

They were almost contracted, basically eliminated, in a move for MLB to make more money as the Twins and the Expos, the two teams this was going to happen to, were not raking in the bucks. The Twins and Expos both were awful in the late 1990's and were not a profitable teams. As a result of revenue sharing, this decreased the profit of other teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs all of which are profitable.

The Twins were one of the teams considered when baseball was thinking of eliminating a team a few years ago. I'm glad that it didn't happen - the Twins are fun team to watch.

Yes there were talks of them being disbanded or even moved to another city. Montreal Expos were involved as well. It ahd to do with the "talent pool" buit mainly it was due to the fact that they had hardships financially and couldn't get a good fan base. They were in the debt and could afford to keep good players or buy them either. That is why they created the luxury tax. It evens out the financial competition between organizations so they could be competitive.

They weren't going to be 'banned' they were going to be contracted (or disbanded). The year was 2002, MLB was looking to contract 2 teams.

THEY WEREN'T GOING TO BE BANNED JUST CONTRACTED
WHEN BASEBALL UNDER THE USED CAR SALESMAN BUD SELIG WANTED TO ELIMINATE A COUPLE OF WEAK TEAMS. THE OTHER WAS THE EXPOS SINCE MANY FELT NEITHER COULD COMPETE. INSTEAD THEY PUT IN A LUXURY
TAX ON THE MORE AFFLUENT TEAMS TO IMPROVE COMP-
TATIVE BALANCE. OTHER SMALL MARKET TEAMS HAVE CHEATED THE SYSTEM (ROYALS & PIRATES) & POCKTED THIS WELFARE INSTEAD OF TRYING TO IMPROVE THEIR TEAMS.
