My Dad has a cocaine and marijuana problem, and he knows it's affecting his life, but likes it too much to try to quit. He's 53 years old, and basically has given up on life, stating an overdose in Jamaica this spring is basically his dream way out. My mom has no idea, and if she does, she ignores it. My Mom is a manic depressive, and her outlook on life in general is a "tragedy". I want to save my family, what do I do when they don't seem to want help?

You can not fix a drug addict, or an alcoholic, you can only fix yourself. Find your nearest Al-anon meeting, it is for the spouse or kids of an addict. They will show you how to fix yourself and show you that none of this is your fault. That you can not control an addict, nor should you, it just makes your life bad. The best way to help them is to get on with your life. I went Thur it it saved my emotional life.

You should find a support group for family or friends of addicts. There is at least one in every major city as well as countless on line forums and discussion groups. Talking to persons who have been in a similar situation will help you to better understand how to deal with your own. The unfortunate fact is that you cannot help somebody who doesn't want to be help. You cannot help somebody who doesn't think they have a problem.

If you are so inclined you may want to contact an intervention co-coordinator. They will have a great deal of information on treatment programs and ways to facilitate recovery.

Good luck.

this' not easy thing to do, first you have to take care of you just so you dont go crazy, then you start by finding them some counseling sessions that can be done at home since they'd not willingly want to go. dont stop there cuz it might not be enough for them, write people like montel, dr phil, oprah and any others who could easily get you the resources and financial help that you couldnt get on your own. even with all that, you might come up with a plan C in case you need it. Do not stop fighting for your parents, they are precious and they need you more than ever. good luck and may God walk with you along this journey!

If you're underage and living at home, tell a teacher at your school. Teachers are "mandated reporters", meaning that if they think your fathers drug habit is resulting in abuse or neglect of you, they HAVE to tell Child Protective Services. When Child Protective Services gets involved, they'll tell your parents that your father can't do drugs or he'll loose custody of you. If the fear of loosing custody doesn't force him into treatment, absolutely nothing else will.

You cannot help someone that is not willing to help themselves. That is the first step. I can sympathize my father has had an addiction to drugs for many years and I have isolated myself from him. It is not easy to see someone in that type of situation. Good luck to you. God be with you and your family.

Drug addicts will not get help until they want to. You should contact that show intervention and see if they can help get your dad and mom to rehab. You should also confront them and ask them why they became parents if they were just going to be drug addicts.
