How do cheerleaders get those perfect curls in the back of their ponytail. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. Picture on the link below.

Yeah, those ones are fake. BUT! The way we got our curls back in the days was by using those heated rollers or a curling iron, hair gel, and hair spray.
What you would do is use a water-based hair gel (because the alcohol-based gel flakes), put that on one section that you are going to curl. put the curling iron on the section and curl it. While the hair is in the iron, spray that section with some hairspray. Go kind of light with the gel. It will smell sort of and there will be steam since you are applying heat to a liquid. As long as your head isn't on fire, you should be fine. Let the gel dry up in the iron (so keep it in the iron for 20-30 seconds) and pull the iron straight down so that you don't unravel the curl. When you get all of the hiar finished, put some finishing wax on the hair that isn't in the ponytail to add gloss and shine to it, and use a finishing hairspray with sheen in it to add some glossiness to the ponytail.
If you decide to use hot rollers instead, do the same thing. But, you keep the rollers in for 25-35 minutes.
Or, if you want to be lazy, buy the extensions.

We would buy the fake curls that you put in your hair, kinda like the one in your picture. But before we bought the fake curls, we'd sleep with our hair in a ponytail with tons and tons of rollers in our hair and put tons and tons of gel and hairspray on.

when i was a cheerleader in high school for competitions we would put our hair in a bun then connect those fake curly ponytails to the bun

We used the attachments.... That's the only way to get the curls and keep them.

wow, my hair was never that curly. i just used a lot of gel and hair spray and my curls stayed in fine
