essentially the neighborhood vowed to report anything suspiciouse
so if they saw someone hanging out in front of your house they would call the cops just out of principle. is it any safer???
depends on the criminal if hes ballsy or not. its more of a deterant than an actual preventer so if the burglar doesnt see the sign youll still get robbed but if a neighbor sees it he/she will intervine

Most of the other answers have just missed the point. The N W system is set up in different neighbourhoods to be the eyes and ears for the police. Each watch area has a coordinator and if anything suspicious is noted by any of the residents they inform the coordinator who then contacts the police. This stops the police getting perhaps 10 calls about the same incident. Should you live in such an area? Definitely yes as it will automatically give you a discount on your household insurance. Because the insurance companies like it then you can rest assured that the system works and if you do not have a Neighbourhood Watch then get one started.

a neighbour watch scheme is a neighbourhood that will watch out 4 one anothers homes and property.
yes u should feel safer if u sign up 2.
less crime? that's debatable, watching out's 1 thing but whether police arrive on the same day as the report of suspicious behaviour is 50% luck and 50% whether the police r not 2 busy.

my neighbourhood has 1, yes we will do our best 2 b good neighbours and it's working well so far.
but we still get our fair share of idiot a-holes, that live in the area but refuse 2 sign up.
why?
they won't say.

I am proud to say this on here to everyone, but I have won from the police 4 awards for helping to fight crime and anti-social behaviour where I live. My last award was in September 2006.
Neighbourhood Watch schemes are not what people think they are (Being Nosey) They do work and reduce the fear of crime in the community you live.
If a crook roams around your community and you see that they are up to no good, surely you would call the police, welll that is exactly how Neighbourhood Watch works. What is being nosey about that.

Neiborhood Watch just means that your neighbors supposedly keep an eye out for suspicious behavior and call the police if they spot it. In reality it often means that you neighbors call the police if one of your friends circles the block more than once while looking for your house. I spent several years in a neighborhood watch area where people regularly called the police on my teenage son while he was walking home from the bus with a large and suspicious looking backpack full of books. But when criminals pulled a U-Haul up to my garage and took off with everything of value, nobody picked up the phone.

Then someone broke in to the house about a year later and took off with everything they could carry. Again, no call to the police.

Possibly not. It depends on how active the neighbourhood watch asociation is, and how well they integrate with police etc.

Basically, it is a community group that is concerned about safety, and aims to encourage residents of an area to be more proactive in reporting suspicious actiivity, crime, vandalism etc.

Find out from the school or police who you can contact to join the association, discuss, or attend a meeting if you really want to see how well organised and effective they are.

Good luck.

Neighborhood watch is set up by friends and neighbors of a community who watch out for eachother and yes it helps to keep down crime. You should feel safer in these communities and should join in to help others.

Its where people in the town go round and look out for crime and vandalism, they are chosen by the neighbourhood to keep guard of people and their property. They are very safe areas now but you will never be totally safe wherever you go.

It just means the neighbors keep an eye out for each other. I stay at home during the day and I notice strange cars or people when they come in the area, or strange behavior from people coming into the neighborhood. We get mail and newspapers for anyone who may be out of town. things lke that.

Also helped the night that our neighbors daughter climbed out her bedroom window to go party....

And it helped when I saw new neighbors unloading thier van rather suspiciosly.. turns out they had a van full of stolen stereo equipment, they had been storing items in thier garage, then selling it all at a flea market.

For the 7 years I have lived in my neighborhood with a neighborhood crime watch, we have had barely any crime. It does work because word gets out that we know what is going on in our neighborhood and will not hesitate to report it.
