We want to plant trees along our property line as both a privacy and noise screen (our house is on a busy street). My landscaper suggests Podocarpus Gracilior? I was thinking Leyland Cypress. We need to plant them at a minimum of 6'H and would prefer something that is fast-growing to at least 15'H. The trees are to be planted between two existing fences, allowing only about 35" in width for the trees. If the space between the 2 fences is too narrow, we can always remove one of the fences, as the trees are more important. Please help!

Go to arborday.org and you can put in your zip code and it will tell you what trees can grow there. Then from that list you can make a decision--which one will serve your purpose best. Make sure you like the tree. Don't pick a tree that will work but you don't like the looks or growing habits.

Italian Cypress. They grow tall and narrow, but are very dense. They use them in the midwest for wind breaks, and my aunt used them for a noise break (freeway).
They did an admirable job, and looked good, too. They are dark green and grow to about 30 feet or more if left untrimmed.

I forgot to add, they are evergreen and not messy at all.

Plant them close together and you'll have a beautiful, functional, tall hedge!
