I want land in certain area, there is a lot of farmland there but none for sale, can I approach farmers and ask if they want to sell?

Of course you can- this happens all the time. You can go directly to the owner, if you know who it is, or you can get a special map from your county courthouse that will show you who the land owners are. Track them down from there.

It depends on how much land you want, what you want to do with it, how much you are willing to pay for it, and HOW you would pay for it. If you make the first move, even if they are willing to sell, you'll pay more than if they already had the land on the market. If you want to buy more rather than less land, it might be more worth their while to consider it. If you pay cash, you'll be in a better bargaining position. If the purpose you put the land to is compatible with the area, you will also get a better response.
Do your homework, look for other recent land sales in your area, work up you own comps, and try not to be too pushy. State you desires, let them chew on it, then follow-up. Good luck.

You have a few options. You could write a letter to the owner or pay them a visit. I found the most effective way is to hire a Realtor. You can make an agreement with them to do everything they would normally do but you pay them the commission, not the sellers. Good Luck!
