Children learn from their parents I have always been told.
To me it is just a game, if we lose. we lose there is always another game.. But when you get a bunch of ill mannered players together that have never been able to control their tempers under any situation, how do you expect them to behave proper when playing any game.
And then they say will we are sorry, if they were sorry they should never have done it in the first place.
Again they don't understand where their children have learned bad habits and bad sportsmanship. The players should look in a mirror and see where the kids learned it from...

I tend to agree. Hockey is a physical sport, so it's not unusual that an occasional fight occurs, but to the extent that the NHL tolerates it, and then gives fighters a measily 5 minutes as a penalty, is ridiculous and tarnishes the sport.

If you wanna fight, you get ejected from the game. Period.

Its tradition, hockey is a fairly violent sport to start with fighting is merely a linear progression of which thankfully safety nazis have yet to restrain. Human nature should not be subjugated to the past.

Fighting in ice hockey is a controversial aspect of the sport. The practice of fighting in ice hockey is tolerated in all levels of hockey, with various penalties assigned. The penalties, however are tiered towards the age and skill level of the leagues. Fighting is condoned in the National Hockey League, the junior leagues, and other professional minor leagues, where a five minute major penalty is given. However, fighting is punishable by ejection in the Peewee, College and European leagues, as in women's hockey at any level. Although it results in a major penalty, players who engage in fighting (except for instigating) do not get ejected from the game. Hockey remains the only major professional sport in North America to not eject players for fighting. Fights often are spontaneous, as a knee-jerk reaction to an on-ice incident during a game, though it has become more common for two opposing players (usually the enforcer for each team) to mutually agree to a fight, which usually occurs right after a faceoff. There are strategies on when, where, and how to fight, and these are difficult skills to learn.

Despite its detractors, hockey fighting remains popular with many fans. A good hockey fight never fails to get people out of their seat, and it's a common occurrence for fights to be replayed on sports news shows.

hope this helps in some way

Technically...they don't. It just happens a lot. The band "Five for Fighting" got its name for the penalty given for fighting in hockey. :-)

I wouldn't say they allow it, I think it's more of how do we stop these guys without getting hurt ourselves. They do get penalized and I think sometimes even fined.
