I was engaged to a guy who while we were together bought me a 1,300 ring and a laptop for me and himself well we broke up because he was controling and abusive he demanded my daughter(from a previous relationship)call him dad and she was only 9 months old....he told me if i really loved him i would let him adopt her. Things started getting rocky after we moved in together we were on the edge of a break-up when i tried to give the ring back to him and he wouldn't take it he told me to keep it i tried giving him the laptop too i figured that way he could sell it or something but he wouldn't take it so i had him sign them over to me saying they were a gift and that he gave them to me...Well a few weeks after that we got into an arguement and he jumped on the hood of my blazer and wouldn't let me go anywhere he had my daughter screaming she was so scared so i told him to get out i kicked him out of MY house.now he wants money for the computer and wants to sue does he have the right to sue?

He can try, but he will likely lose. These were gifts - they are not his property.

Good luck.

He has a right to sue. Will he win? In my opinion he gave you gifts and you would likely win but I cannot guarantee the outcome.
More importantly is the safety of you and your child. If he jumped on your hood and would not let you go anywhere you may be able to get an order of protection from the court prohibiting him from being around you and your child and keeping him out of your home. Consult a lawyer. If you cannot afford one call legal aid. Also, many courts have individuals assigned to assist persons who seek orders of protection.

If he signed something saying they were a gift, he can sue but it won't get him anywhere.

You should consider documenting his behavior, changing your locks immediately and making sure your doors, windows, etc are well lit at night and secure.

This guy sounds scary. Let your neighbors know he doesn't live with you anymore so if they see him around they can tell you and if they see him trying to get into the house you can call the police.

Please be careful.

Yes - he can sue you and may or may not win. They (the legal system) say, "It's ALL in the documents." You write "so I had him sign them over to me..." That's It! He signed them over to you, he probably has his version of the story too. Its time consuming and costly to file and follow a lawsuit, most likely- the case would be dismissed if it ever gets filed.

he could sue you but he will most likely loose the battle because as you said he signed those gifts over to you so he has nothing on you. good luck!

He can sue all her wants. That doesnt mean hes gonna win. He signed a letter stating they were gifts (pretty smart of you, BTW).
