There used to be a helicopter connection between the two. Call BA and see if they know of any private companies in the area that still run this service.
The M25 as you have been told is a nightmare somedays. So allow a good 2-3 hours if taking the airport bus or driving, the more time you can allow the better. Better still if timings are gonna be tight adjust your travel arrangements and arrive a day earlier at Gatwick and stay in a hotel on the edge of Heathrow for the following day early flight.

This is from the British Airways website:

London Heathrow and Gatwick airports are located approximately 30 miles apart, and it is necessary to travel between them by bus.

The minimum connecting time between Heathrow and Gatwick is 3 hours.
This includes a bus journey of between 1 and 1½ hours.

You can take the Gatwick Express train from Gatwick to Victoria station in London, (http://www.gatwickexpress.com/index.asp?SID={A969B406-4169-43F2-8CDC-7F025B5ECB6E} takes about 20 min) and then the tube to Heathrow (takes 30 min).
There are also coaches that go from Gatwick directly to Heathrow. (make sure you get off the correct terminal!) Journey Time : Scheduled 75 minutes, but allow much longer.

When I flew to & from Africa via London, the connecting coach was actually included in our price. Check with your travel agent!

Remember how expensive trains are here, though. I know the Gatwick express is £30 return. I think it's the most expensive train journey, in terms of pence per mile, in the world! The coach between the two airports will be the best option if cash is an issue.

hmm well its along the M25 which is always busy, even though there's 5 lanes by Heathrow now! I would say a good 45 minutes drive in fair conditions but I would allow much more time just in case - the M25 can be so tempremental!!

I would allow about 1 hour of driving time. I think it is about 50 miles from one airport to the other.

I suggest you call any of the various agencies below as they provide taxi services.
