Does anyone know how many states have a minimum wage rate less than the federal minimum wage rate? I am having trouble finding this. I think that it's just Kansas, but I'm not for sure. Can anyone help?

Only 1 State has a lower minimum wage than the Federal Minimum Wage, Kansas. (The Virgin Islands do as well, but they aren't a state). However, the Federal Minimum Wage applies to virtually all employees of Kansas, save for the possibility of small family owned businesses that deal in only cash. This is because any business that partakes in interstate commerce must follow the Federal Minimum Wage and any business that accepts credit cards is doing interstate buisiness.

None. There can be no wage lower than the federal minimum wage. The only exceptions being that you are allowed to pay a lower wage during training (limited to 40 hours), and in fact you don't have to pay at all for the first 40 hours of employment.

Also, you can pay a lower wage to someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to get a job (someone who is disabled, for example).

Some states have no minimum wage laws at all (like where I live). But we follow the federal standard.
