Any time you talk about "future trends" you are talking about technology.

Some key recent issues might be Robert Rodregiz telling the DGA to stick it for his film Sin City because he insisted on giving co-credit to another director.

Another is the same director who made Once Upon a Time in Mexico (with Johnny Depp!) all with hand-held video cameras and no film or really a film crew.

People will begin making their own movies -- the current system is in jeopardy. We can shoot and edit with our own equipment and computers now, the demand for very expensive gear is fading.

As ever, the fate of a movie director is in the hands of the editor: he's the guy who puts it all together.
