+ Tarred and feathered was not always an entire body process. It was usually applied over clothing also and the tar was not always boiling tar so you might not exactly get burned, but it would be hot so as to be sticky. The feathers were more of an additional annoyance. You were usually run out of town and had to figure out how to clean yourself up and get the crap out of your hair and off of your body in the woods and on the way to your next home wherever that might have been. The bad thing about tar was that it did not come off with soap and water so you would be a mess for many days and they usually did not allow you to get extra clothing or the turpentine to remove the sticky stuff.
When I was a kid and sailed across the equator (an initiation for Shell Back among other things) for the first time I was tarred and feathered except they used maple suryp. I was misserable for a couple of days. If you ever put kerosine on your skin or turpentine you would find it feels like it burns so you would want to use only a little section per day once you found a supply of it to use to remove your tar and feathers. You would most likely cut off your hair perhaps shave your head and face. (something that most women at the time would rather not do). (for that matter they might not like it much now either)
So no you don't ussually died from it. Yes it marked you for awhile, and made your life misserable. Most people had friends or relatives within a few hundred miles that would take care of them when they could walk there.
Also think about this if you were tarred and feathered and you went to your best friends house for help, do you think his wife would want you to mark up their home when you came in? You woulld probably have to stay in a dog house or chicken coop or barn for awhile. A misserable punishment, fit for counterfitters and thieves.

You were basically killed.
However, I don't quite get your question. Tar and feathering often resulted in death. Think about it: hot tar was poured over your body.

if the tar didnt kill you by the heat of it alone, i would kill you by not letting your skin "breathe"

If they did a good job of it, you would die of suffocation.
