x = dimes
2x = nickels
2x-3 = quarters

Now multiply in the values of the coins:

.10(x) for dimes .10x
.05(2x) for nickels .10x
.25(2x-3) for quarters .50x-.75

all of which sums to 2.05.

Multiply everything by 100 to get rid of the pesky decimals and you get to:

10x + 10x + 50x - 75 = 205

70x = 280

x = 4

SO.....

There are 4 dimes for 40 cents
there are 8 nickels for 40 cents
and there are 5 quarters for 1.25

For a grand total of 2.05.

Happy happy!!
