Are you handy, yourself? It's always nice to receive something personally made. You might purchase an attractive basket [that can later be used otherwise] and stuff it with a variety of notions: we sewers always run out of white/blk/navy thread. Suggestion for sewing machine needles is good. As suggested, a good pair of scissors will be appreciated. May be fun for you to search eBay: there are alot of vintage/or new sewing baskets, thread holders, etc. If you're on the "handy" side, you might do something like take a vintage [kitchen] cutting board [[most have a hanging hole at top handle]; drill appropriately-sized holes to fit dowels that thread spools can fit over; drill holes at a slight angle [up] so that spools will rest in place; place a bit of wood glue in hole before pressing in dowel; you can paint the dowel pieces, or not;

I would suggest a gift certificate to a nice store that sells sewing but also other stuff. Let your sister in law buy what she wishes. Choose a very nice card ; in addition,the sewing lowers day is coming soon, maybe you would like to send a nice e-card?

www.joann.com They have a whole section on gift ideas. Sometimes a gift card is so impersonal. They have some pretty little scissors that look like a bird, for clipping threads. My mother-in-gave me a pair 30 years ago and I still have them and use them all the time.

Without more information it is hard to guess what type of sowing she likes. But, if you don't mind such cheating ideas, maybe you can find a local needleware shop and ask if they do shopping vouchers. This way she can gaurantee getting what she wishes. You can ask her to show you what she gets so that next time you might be able to get something in the same area

I would make her a "quilting basket"..find a nice large basket, put in a quilting booklet, batting, and fabric that is pre cut in squares
(you can buy at any craft/sewing shop), a pair of good sissors, a fabric measuring tape, set of needles, and a pin coushon.
She will have the basket to store her work in..and a quilt to remember you forever!

A good pair of scissors. Fiskars, etc.. about $15-20. They are real sharp and have very comfortable grips. Also, Black and Decker sells electric scissors (cordless, battery-powered) for about $25.
