I recently started welding but its all been outside. With winter coming I want to get indoors. What should I keep in mind where safety is concerned. I have a garage I turned into my shop.

I use a MIG welder.

Biggest issues is making sure nothing catches fire, so keep some extinguishers handy.
Other thing is welding screens to protect other peoples eyes, and stop welding spatter from landing on something.

Since you do not state the type of welding u do (ie arc, mig or tig)
to come with a suggested ventilation method is difficult. I do arc welding and installed an exhaust fan in my garage which I purchase in my local welding supply store. The trouble I believe is from the fumes released by the flux, I'm sure you dont want to burn any and be a hazard source for you or your neighbors. Your local welding supplier could be of great assistance.

Install an exhaust system of some sorts. The bigger the better!! There are all sorts of nasty things in the smoke that is generated by welding.
Go to http://www.weldinginfocenter.org/health/hs_02.html and check the section on ventilation if you want info on the toxicity of welding fumes. It greatly varies by the welding method and the materials being welded.

You best hook up a ventilation fan and keep everything off the floor including grease and oil. Do not tell your insurance company anything or they will cancel.

You want to make sure that you have a vent, to allow the gases to escape and be able to breath.
