Have been there many times in the Navy. The Japaneses still raise their women to be Ladies, like we USE to do in the States. The man pays.

It is case by case, not only Japanese girls but even the older ones would pay for a meal but don't take advantage of this, try to offer first if you are going to date a girl. As for first time, they would pay but they are just the same from other nationals that want their BF to pay for the meal at first or next date.
That is why some guys would take advantage of this and when the relationship didn't get well, after they broke up he would expect that the next girl he would date would do the same for him, too sad to say that after the break up,, it is one of the reason why the girls gets colder for the guy expected her to pay every time they go on date..they would not say because they are shy but forget about the custom, always offer to pay first whenever you can.

Going out for dinner, with guy or girl in a party or gathering, it is a custom to share the bill or pay your own. Tipping is not necessary, what you heard is not what always happened, better to see and experience, and if you decide to teach, that would be a good way to start learning while teaching.

It is partially true. I think 50% of Japanese girls want to split the expense. Whether the girls pay the expense of the table or not, it depends on they sit with what kind of person. 20% of them expect a free ride. As for rest of 30%, Japanese male pay.

I got many many meals and things paid for me. However I was a fulltime vollunteer missionary and so wasnt getting paid a cent, in fact we pay to go on the mission, so many people (church members or not) were friendly and would gochi us at meals and stuff. It is custom *sometimes* for the older person to pay, I know that is true with some Asian cultures, but if its a boyfriend/girlfriend situation then usually the guy will pay, coz he is the boyfriend. lol, and thats his job traditionally.

Valentines Day is supposed to be a day where the women give small gifts to men. A month later there is White Day where the men return the same friendly gestures. Things given are usually chocolates and sweets. Nothing elaborate or over the top. I usually exchange gifts with the ladies in my office.

maybe, at least my housemate has this experience.
he was going out with a Japanese female friend.
the Japanese girl (who is working & making money) was the one who initiated the date and my housemate was a student, so I guess that's the reason.
it depends on who you going to meet,
if you are meeting some fashionable girls, the chance that they will pay is zero, but for kind, traditional woman, I believe maybe..

If you are talking about a girl friend then it is possible but rare case. I have heard from friends that their gf had paid, meals, hotels even tour expense. But this is only for boy friend and not a common practice.

So, don't think they pay for foreigners.

It's true only this case; you're cool and the lady is fool.
Fortunately and irony, there are such ladies in Japan.

Absolutely not! In fact, it is the opposite. J-girls will expect you to drain your bank account on them. They certainly aren't going to be paying for your meals.

Why do you think japan is a good place to teach English?! Do yourself a BIG favor and follow the link below to the Gaijinpot web site and click on the forums link and read all of the MANY horror stories about ESL teaching in japan.

I haven't heard this, but it would kind of surprise me if they did.. I have heard that waitresses in Japan get offended if you try to leave them a tip though.. what are you going to be doing in Japan?
