D. You usually pay them, you don't always need them, and they are not just used in criminal cases. Family court sees its fair share I'm sure.

Hi there... not a lawyer but have been engaged in litigation support matters in the past... here's my take on your four points:

A - False... "always" makes this false
B - False... usually will expect to be paid for their professional time & related expenses
C - False... often used in technical civil and administrative cases
D - TRUE! But "help" can be ancillary as in to illuminate obscure technical points, clarify issues, and provide "support" for your case
