The first thing you MUST DO is to get your material copy-written FIRST. After wards get it registered with the WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA. All agency's that handle unpublished works won't look at you unless those 2 steps are done first. Otherwise you, the studio, agency, and everyone tied to the work that's not LEGALLY represented will be sued.

The first step before getting it copy-written is to put the idea on paper (obviously) and find a group or an experienced screenwriters that will critique your material. You can find them in local colleges in your area.

Keep in mind that sometimes it takes years for anything to get made. This is not to discourage you in anyway. It's just to give you a realistic view in the entertainment BUSINESS.

If anyone is interested in your story and you option the script to a person or company, GET IT IN WRITING! I can't stress that enough. How much should you get? Your lawyer will know. Be sure to get a lawyer that's reputable. Your agent (when you find one to rep you) is the ONLY PERSON who can get your screenplay past the secretary. Otherwise, if you go to a studio on your own, one or 2 things will happen:

They'll tell you they don't take unsolicited material. Or they'll take it and as soon as you leave, it'll be in the garbage or in someones bird cage. You have to keep in mind, these studios get TONS of screenplays per day and are read by people paid to read it.

If your screenplay doesn't catch their attention within the first 10 pages, it'll wind up in the shredder. Trust me. It happened to me.

Like I said, be realistic in your expectations. Your asking strangers to gamble money on your idea. That's a risk. In this business you HAVE to know when to take it.

But I ENCOURAGE you to write your idea whether your story gets made or not.

Remember: Do your homework. Write what you KNOW and HAVE FUN!

Good luck!

Write up an outline script then take a few copies and mail one to yourself by a recorded method. Store this copy without opening the envelope. This proves it was your original idea.

Then you can approach producers etc. with your outline script to see if there is any interest. If they steal your idea you have proof and can sue.

unfortuately no mater how good your idea is you wont make anything off it. You need to have a reputation for haveing good movie ideas, you would have to make a career out of it. Then maybe in 20 years people would listen to you.
