It's a punctuation mark (dot) at the end of a sentence?
That goes for both guys and girls, btw...
If you're referring to the monthly cycle of a woman...Reader's Digest version...
The female body builds a lining of blood in the uterus to prepare for a fertilized egg to attach inside the uterus (pregnancy) When pregnancy does not occur (YIPPEE!) the blood lining then is expelled from the woman's body which we call a "period"
After being expelled, the body then begins to build a new lining in the uterus all over again...this goes on for approximately the next 30 years!

a period is . . .
A period is intended to bring closure to a thought. A pause. Slightly longer than a comma, but never intended to last a whopping 5-7 days! (With the added benefits of chocolate cravings and mood swings

Let's see, it's the dot at the end of a sentence, it's also a specified length of time that is used most notably in schools and certain sporting events like hockey, and it also refers to a woman's menstrual cycle. It's kind of hard to explain, so if you'd like to know more Google "menstrual cycle."

Oh snap! you're referring to a woman's period. That's when her menstrural cycle is complete and the blood flushes from the body via the vagina.
