Ah, Tricky question.

The cable companies all use modems that are DOCSIS compliant.

The catch is that some of the modems will accept firmware updates over the wire, and other will not.

I am not not in favor of giving the cable company anymore money and the cable modems out there generally have this feature for the firmware. Stick with a known name such as Motorola (most common) Linksys or such.

Hope this helps

Best Buy usually has good deals. If you're shopping for a home modem you do not want a wireless one. (Wireless modems are portable and you need special service like Verizon, which is slow but accessible all over the place.) If you want to make your home wireless you will want a wireless router, which allows you to access your modem at high speed connections. If you are getting broadband from your cable or telephone company the service may include the use of one of their modems at no extra cost to you.

We started out renting a modem from the cable co. but then we found the exact same modem at Walmart. It was only $60. We bought it to save the $6 a month rental fee.

Don't buy from cable company. Why because you don't have to pay partial payments for the modem monthly. Yes i said partial payment because they charge you monthly for the modem. If you get your own modem, your cable company can always work with you to make it compatible with anything.

I have a modem via my cable company because if something goes wrong or it breaks they will replace it free of charge.
