I have a 6 week old baby who grunts all the time. My pediatrician says it is fine since she doesn't seem to be in distress. But my husband and I are concerned she has a need we are not meeting, especially since it seems to be pretty constant. Is it just normal "vocalization" or something else?

Yes, it is normal for babies to make all sorts of noises. When my youngest was born, he was 6 weeks early and grunted allllllll the time. The doctor told me these were "Preemie noises" but all babies make some sort of vocalization at any ages. Now he is almost 11 months and likes to practice his yelling instead. I miss the grunts!

Congratuations with your new baby!

i would be a little more concerned then your dr seems to be. My son was the same way and he ended up in the Nicu on breathing machines and tubes all over. I cannot remember exactly what it was called so ill try to explain it. When you take a deep breath this thing like a sac opens and closes well his was sticking a little more than usual and caused his to have a tough time breathing. He wasnt under distress at first but it caused this. Try to see another dr to make sure. im not saying theres something wrong with your dr but your babys health is very important and i would double check. Goodluck

It's completely normal, by daughter grunted all the time. Once they learn how to make a noise they do it nonstop until they learn a new one. My daughter started with grunted and then moved to growling then squealing then yelling and now that she's able to say some words all I hear all day is dadada labaladada. etc. See it as a sign of growth in your baby.

My youngest grunted a lot when she was first born, now at 11 weeks she has grown out of it. It's normal.

My son grunted all the time! We called him "Rob-osaurous" haha, he was a preemie and I even asked my dr. about it. She said preemies just grunt more often, but all babies grunt and some just do it more often and louder than others!

Congratulations on your new baby!!!!

Ha ha
Yeah my son used to do that alot we used to call him King Kong .
I think it's normal we found it hysterical and cute it was more funny because he was this huge 16 pound baby at about 6 weeks. Your baby is just trying to interact with you so cute.
