To me it means that to take a negative approach to a situation is to admit defeat before even trying. Whilst tackling a problem with pessimism one is not putting the required amount of thought and enthusiasm into it. Negative energy is blocking the path of the positive, hence things will not work out and further pessimism will follow. If a battle is to be won, the person leading that battle should be ready to admit that a battle includes losses wether it is won or not. To this effect if their focus is incorrect, their vision is blurred which will cause them to dwell on the minor losses and lose sight of the victory at the end of the battle leaving pessimism to obscure optimism.

Hope this helps.

I think that's supposed to be "Pessimism never WON any battle" meaning you can't win by looking at the negative side of things.

"Pessimism never won any battle" means, that pessimism is a sure way to make your opponent win the battle. The pessimist is always going to think the dark side of everything. Even if he is going to win, he's always going to feel defeated and that will affect him psychologically-- he backs down, his opponent wins!

Did you mean to ask "won" any battle?

It means you cannot tackle and obstacle or a battle without a positive, optimistic outlook.

It means that you have look at the optimistic sides of things. Don't focus on the negatives, focus on the positive. if you concentrate on the negative, you'll never win, but if you search out the positive, you'll probably succeed

How can you win a battle if you are pessimistic and don't believe in your cause? You can't. The key is to be optimistic and believe that you can do it!
