A sound card is the device that produces sound for your computer. It is what you plug your speakers into.
If you are not getting sound, there are several things to check: Make sure the volume control is turned up on your speakers and that they are on. Make sure the volume control is turned up in the program you are running. And finally, make sure the Master volume control (often available in the lower right hand corner of your pc in the active program bar) is turned up, and that the Mute button is not checked.

Most modern computers dont have separate sound cards anymore. Back in the day, sound cards were like graphics cards of today. They handled sound processing so the main processor wouldnt have to. There are still some separate sound cards out there for audiophiles but onboard sound has come a long way and should be good enough for the casual user. Your computer should have a sound device, probably the microsoft audio driver. If you arent getting sound, you may need to update the driver by right clicking on my computer, selecting properties, and clicking on the hardware tab. There you will be able to update drivers for your sound device.

the other user answered this question, but, when I bought my computer I downloaded and added games...by doing this, my sound card could not handle the quality that was required thus I had very choppy and sometimes no sound. To make a long story short, I went to my local Circuit City and Best Buy and bought a sound card...just put into an open slot in the back of the processor, and it will work fine....hope this helps!

A sound card is needed if you want to hear sounds other than the beeps or clicks you will hear from your pc speaker. It is just a inexpensive device which you can purchase, and will slot into your computer. You will then have to install the drivers which will come in a cd, and connect speakers to it. Since installing the card requires you to open up your pc, its probably best that a trained technician does it.
