My Dad is always saying "divorce is a waste of time, anyone i know who has seperated has married someone else who is the very same, albeit a bit younger or something a bit different but more or less the same person"

That is a case against remarriage, not divorce. Some people who get divorced decide never to remarry because if it didn't work the first time, why try again.

not sure what he means "divorce is a waste of time" i.e. why give up the pain you know for pain you don't know? Marriage is a commitment. The warm fuzzy feeling and "cool idea" about getting married wears off very quickly. We all love the adrenaline rush of 'being" in love and even with platonic friends of the opposite sex are thrilled at the "conquest" of a friend, and the "excitement" of a new relationship. However marriage is nothing but hard work. Definitely worth the work however ESPECIALLY if children are involved. The only reason I'd ever divorce someone is if they're unfaithful (and unrepentant), or if they have an addiction, or if they're abusive to you (physically --"emotional" abuse you can work on)

I think that it MAY be true, especially if the person picked a very poor choice in a spouse. If you don't get counseling to understand why you picked a bad partner, it's very likely that you will replicate your bad choice again. But it is always possible to learn from your mistakes and have a better life. And sometime it's better to be alone than to be with a bad partner.

No I'm 28 and have been married before but I learned a lesson from that marriage to know what I'm looking for and not make the same mistake again.

i dont think thats true, for most people,,

usually people divorce because while there is alot they like/liked/loved about someone,,,, the other things overshadow/and or kill that feeling

so maybe what your Dad is seeing, are those similarities,,,, the basic things one likes,,, but hopefully other things that are compatible as well

though there are of course some people who are attrackted to negative things,,, then they find those in the next person also

No, it is not true. In some cases maybe, but not always. I married someone totally different and I am very happy now.

i disagree. people change, their priorities change and sometimes you may fall out of love with a person but that doesn't mean you won't find another satisfying relationship with someone else. it may be true if a person has issues and continues to behave destructively in every new relationship...

Your dad is wise - the grass is not always greener. Sometimes it's better to have the devil you know!
