www.switchboard.com is a great source to use.

It also provides reverse phone lookup.

just type it into yahoo.com (dont use google, it doesnt work so well for numbers) If its a company it will tell you what company, where, etc. But its a little harder if its a person. For that you might want to try verizon.com
