Everyone knows someone in their family that smokes & is affected by it some how. Be it a nasty cough (the smoker's cough), always ill, overweight, suffering with cancer.......we all know someone. I am raising my 13 year old brother & he knows how I feel about it. IT'S UNEXCEPTABLE!!!!! PERIOD!!!! Let him know how much you care for him & how you don't want to bury your son in 20 years. There is probably a reason why he is smoking.....exceptance? He might need a mentor. This is tricky because your his mother but you can't be everywhere he is. Good Luck!! Follow your heart.

experimenting like this is normal for a teenager, all you can do is point out that it's against the law until he is older, it's a disgusting and dangerous habit and kids who smoke do not look cool, show him how disappointed you are and stick to the grounding thing. At the end of the day if he is going to smoke then he can do it quite easily without you knowing, just make it clear to him you don't approve and you would be very disappointed if he decided to carry on. But try not to worry I tried it when I was 13 and a few times more in my late teens but I am now 24 and do not smoke at all and have no desire to. It's hard but he is getting to the age that things like this are going to happen and 90% of the time most teenagers get over stupid things like this no worse for wear and a few lessons learned along the way, we all have to make mistakes to make us better people it might be a rough ride for a few years yet but just as long as he knows he has his parents behind him no matter what he will learn to do the right thing. good luck.

DO NOT make a big deal of it as all this will do is make it more desirable to him, go on the net show him the down side to smoking and how much it costs, all he is doing the the normal teenage thing of rebelling give it time do not keep on at him about it the novelty will soon wear off, if it does not there is not a great deal you can do as he may not smoke at home but he will when he is out but believe me the more you make of this situation the worse it will be.

Indeed, be emphathetic (ie "I know what must be appealing about this to you...") but firm about how you absolutely do not want him smoking. Explain as graphically as you can about emphysema, lung cancer, survival rates. Remind him that while he's a teenager he feels invincible, like bad things won't happen to him. And it might not now...but years from now, when his health is bad, or he's truly very seriously ill/dying... he will regret that he started this. Remind him it's much easier to stop now than when he's addicted to the nicotine, etc. Remind him that while there's a certain "bad boy" appeal about smoking (to some girls) that it's really a turn-off in terms of odor, bad breath, teeth, etc. Tell him it would make you very sad and disappointed if he continued with this.

I am guessing you do not smoke, but I am sure you know people who do, these are the best people to explain the addiction that comes with smoking, or maybe a doctor or a smoking cessation officer to explain the health dangers, there is lots of info on the Internet with graphic pictures off cancerous lungs etc.

If these do not put him off, then there is nothing you can do except ban his pocket money so he can not buy them.

You are doing the right thing by punishing him however, you are not with him 24 hrs. Talk too your son about how dangerous smoking is and he will have a better understanding to why he should not smoke.. Good Luck too the both of you...

It is a very difficult situation. You can only tell your son you forbid him to smoke, knowing that the kid will still do it behind your back. What makes things worse is if a teenager know they are not allowed doing something they want to do it even more.
My suggestion is to tell your son you do not back him smoking, advise him of all the health risks and all, but still let him do it, as he will soon find out its all overated. If he knows you allow him to do it, there won't be the kick of doing something 'illegal'.

I'm an 18 year old smoker so I'm talking from experience. If you try to force him to quit like my dad did it will make him want to smoke that much more. It is a form of rebellion. By the way, if he wants to smoke that bad, he will get them from his friends, or alot of people may buy them for him. Talk to him and tell him the dangers. make it clear that you don't approve, but don't try to force him to quite. that will be a losing battle on your behalf.

P.S. If you smoke hell see it as you being hypocritical,so don't smoke anywhere around him. " Good Luck"

Talk to him about it and find out why he is smoking. Don't make it a witch hunt or a big telling off. If you discuss it with him in an adult manner and give him the chance to stop you will get a more positive response and also explain the consequences! If he does it again come down on him like a tonne of bricks!

Not much you can do. Grounding him won't help. He'll only sneak it more behind your back in defiance. Don't give him any extra money, but if he's working, you can't very well take away his own pay. Show him some pics on the net of cancer riddled lungs, or mouth/throat cancer. Maybe that will open his eyes.
