I love crocheting. I absolutely love it. In fact, I just don't think I can live without it. But I'm having problems lately. I made a hat, made sure the gague matched perfectly, and followed the directions exactly; the hat came out waaaay too big. I made an amigurumi mushroom the other night, and while it came out really cute, it looks nothing like the pattern. Again, I followed the directions exactly. Is it me, or is it the patterns? Are there any books I can look into that will give me good tips?

Sometimes when following patterns you may have to adjust to what fits you. all written patterns are not correct. there is no set rule that says you have to follow a pattern to the letter, sometimes looking at the pictures when available are a lot more help.

What you should have done is to crocheted a few rows and tried this band on for size, and adjusted the pattern accordingly.Measurements in crochet are something I've learned to ignore. For an example, For my 36" bust the patterns say I should be a size 14. I'm a 6. I crochet sweaters in an 8, just to be safe. You could do a search for the site of the yarn you used. They may offer you more help with your question and have some hints they can offer.

I think some patterns are just bad. I tried making some mouse cozies I saw on Knitty Gritty and they weren't right.

Maybe as you're using the wrong yarn weight. I made some booties that said to use"sport weight yarn" I used worsted weight. My 2 year old daughter can wear them they're so big

maybe you followed the pattern of the hat right, it was just a huge size? triple check your gauge and the ize of your hook! maybe also tighten up your ends, and make sure that, at the end of every row before you turn, you chain that one, lone stitch!!

Maybe you were crocheting too lose! or that maybe you should use a smaller hook. Last hat I made was for a baby.. LOL it was big enough to fit me..
