Guess it is the opposite of the scene from Independence Day. Instead of assuming ballet and finding out it was exotic dancing, like the first lady did in that movie, people assume exotic and have to be told if it is isn't. Sorry--there are simply more exotics than real dancers, and if you have a pretty face it is easier to make that wrong connection.
If someone tells me "I'm a dancer" for her job, I usually ask them where so I'll know what they mean, but you should take care prevent confusion (unless you want to sow it on purpose--some men might find it hot) tell them where or what kind of dancing you do, instead of just saying "I'm a dancer".
If you've corrected him already but he persists in calling you a stripper, it could be flirting--if he is a nice guy otherwise, tell him to dance for you!

I teach dancers in college. One of my classes has 30 students in it and we discuss some of what you are talking about.
In the broadest sense, I encourage everyone to define themselves first as an "artist."
He, "What do you do?"
She, "I am an artist."
He, "Oh, you are a painter."
She, "No, I am a dancer."
The idea is that you don't get labeled any smaller than you must be. I may be an artist who expresses myself through choreography or an artist who designs lights or an artist who happens to plays guitar.
Face it, people want to label you comfortably. It's a fact of life and often just part of the pecking order we humans insist on. Define yourself in the broadest sense and don't let people make you small. If someone immediately thinks you take your clothes off, it's your fault in the way you describe yourself.
My other issue is with people who say, "I am just a dancer." That word "just" is so limiting ... but that's another answer to another question.

My answer would be "If you are dancer that means you dance. Most likely, in a dance studio. Possibly ballet, possibly modern or jazz, possibly ballroom"
Hmm, it looks like everyone answers ACCORDING TO THEIR MIND. Ballet dancers think you're a ballet dancer. If people are not dancers, they say something that comes to mind, that is, something they liked to watch other people dance. So it kinda tells you where this guy's mind is.

I would assume you like dancing, I say I'm a dancer to, because it's a hobby, you know it makes me happy. It's just like saying your an artist, only the medium you use is yourself. People who assume such things should rethink their mind set, and realize that dancers are dance for their own pleasure, and not for anyone elses. Love and kisses Clara

i think you're one who's invested time and money to be a dancer. If not you, your parents. I don't think of the exotic dancers. I think of Ballet, like my Girly does. I wish i could dance, but i'm a musician... I know where you're coming from :)

well,
the first thing that pops into my mind is the question...
"what kind of dancer?"
Since there are many different kinds of dances there are also and different kinds of dancers....
if you would like to avoid confusion.... it would be nice to define frm the beggining....eg " I am a Ballet dancer", "I am a Tango dancer, "I am a salsa dancer", " I am a theater dancer etc"

When you say you are a dancer, I am thinking along the lines of ballet. Invite him to one of your shows to see you really are a dancer. (Maybe next time you talk to him, if you do ballet of course, say you are a ballerina)

I think you must be a good dancer, and you take lessons you pay for at a studio in hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tap, modern, etc.
