I have a spreadsheet with a set of figures, all of which will have been increased by 17.6% before sent on to us (a finders fee, just so you know).
What can I do to find the original figure without the percentage increase?

Thanks all,

For this I will use 200 as an example for figure you have....
The equation is:
x(1.176)=200
x=the original figure
Divide both sides of the equation by 1.176. This leaves you with:
x=200/1.176
x=170.07
This is the original figure.

Divide this figure (the one including the 17.6% increase) by 1.176 to get the original value.

just multiply the given figure by 100 and then divide by 117.6 to get the original figure

original = (100/117.6) * given

The figure sent to you will represent 117.6%.
The original figure will be 100%.
So if the figure sent to you is x, then the original amount is:
(x/117.6) x 100.

Just divide by 17.6

eg : if the total was 52.92 (thats made by 45 x 1.176= 52.92)
if you divide 52.92 by 17.6% you get 45 (52.92 / 1.176 = 45)

The orginal figure with out mark up was 45

hope i explained that ok....

To increase a number, call it x, by 17.6%, you take the sum of x and 17.6% of x:
x + 0.176x
or, (1 + 0.176)x
1.176x = n

If you know the right side, divide it by 1.176 to find x:
x = n/1.176

if i added 17% to a figure, that figure is now 117% of the origional...

so take the figure and divide by 1.17....

ex .... if my new number is 1,624.... then 1,624 = 100% + 17% so

1624 / 1.17 = 1,388

1,388 + 17% = 1624
