I think that charcoal is the one because in my book it says "when a compund is prepared in the laboratory, sometimes it appeares coloured due to impurities present in it. Colourless compound can be obtained by boiling it in a susention of activated charcoal which absorbs the colour."
As paper is made by mixing pulp in hot water under pressure AND my teacher gave examples of paper and sugar so Charcoal is your answer.
Charcoal is used in activated form and i.e by washing it with steam.
