The British used to justify it with the rationale that they were sharing their civilization with people who didn't have as good of a civilization. I suppose there's something to be said for that attitude, but the entire economic dominance aspect of colonialism doesn't justify it. Good luck!

I don't know if it's ever morally justifiable and yes it has caused many horrible things to happen such as world poverty and aparthide as well as the virtual extiction of the Gaelic language and others. However, it has had some though they may be few positive effects. These include sanitation (if one goes as far back as Rome's colonization of others), medical advances in places that may not have had, and while I don't agree with forcible conversion and am not intolerant the spread of Christianity is something that I see as positive b/c the Word of God in itself never hurt anyone.

Colonialism is never morally justifiable because it means the subjugation of others and, at the very least, the dilution of a people's language, culture, art, religion, etc.

Colonialism can never be justified because while it subjugates one nation, it robs them of their wealth, cultural freedom, their voices and their dignity. At the same time it makes the colonizer nothing better than your equivalent of an ordinary hoodlum and in the long run a parasite that in itself is it's worst enemy.

Using Nigerian history as a basis, I'd say it started with the missionaries who want to bring "civilization" to the "heart of darkness". But the church, according to Chinua Achebe, brought a system of government along with them and manipulate them into adhereing to their own set of rules.
So imagine this: Someone comes along to your backyard to swim in the pool. You allow them to. Then they set up a tent and refused to move and denied you your use of your pool. Later on, they allow you to, but at a certain fee - and none of the money they earned goes back to the refurnishing of the plants in your backyard that they destroyed.
Is it justified I wonder?

Depends. I think we should start colonizing Africa to tell you the truth. It is such a disgusting mess in every country there, even South Africa. I think it's more moral to colonize there at whatever the cost than to have the thousands of people die there everyday.

Whose morals are you using? By the current moral standard, no. By past moral standards, obviously.
