I live in MI and cross the border all the time. You need to have your Birth Certificate, and for a child, since they have no formal ID, have her bring her school ID if she gets one. If you also have an Identification card (you know, the ones they get along with school pictures in case they are ever abducted or lost) have her bring that. The rules will be changing soon to have a passport, but for 2006 the items above do suffice.

Starting in Jan 2007 yes you will need a passport to get back into the US from Canada or Mexico.
You need to get started on it now as you may not get it in time.
Maybe the step mother should pay for a portion of it since it is her wish to take the child out of the country.

NO NO NO. This passport issue is TOTALLY a U.S. program. There are NO plans to require U.S. citizens to present a passport to enter Canada. If they are all U.S. citizens, all they need to bring is proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) and it's a good idea to bring photo ID if possible.
They will be able to get back home too, however, in the future, everyone will need a passport to enter the U.S.

Yes-starting the first week of January, a passport is needed.
It will cost you alot more, but, you had better put a rush on it or it will not be here in time. It usually takes 4-8 weeks to get it.

Yes, they all will need passports. They have just recently changed this law, you may want to check out some of Canada's visitor sites because many of the rules have been changed about entry, what you are allowed to enter into the country with, etc.
Good Luck with the trip!

I believe that at the time you are not required to have a passport to go to Canada from the US, but you will be required to have the original birth certificate (or possibly another proof of who you are) to get past the border.
I have heard, though, that in the future, you will be required to have a passport if you want to go to Canada. I think it will change in a year or two?

Well to go into Canada you don't need one but when you come back to the USA you need one. Well tell your husband it will be part of his daughter's Christmas present. He should grow up and help you and your children as much as he can. Sounds to me he's a deadbeat father and you can tell him that for me. But you do need one>

Any proof of her US citizenship should do. It's best to bring multiple ones to be safe.
Birth certificate.
State issued license- Go to DMV and as her parent you can fill out an affidavit proving who she is. She can't drive, but it is strong proof of her identity.
