Should animals like this be kept in captivity? I heard that killer whales can live up to 100 years old but half of the ones in captivity at Sea World have died within 1 decade.... what is your view?

we'll it was the whales instict ( how they kill their prey) but they captured him from the wild and if they let him go he will most likely not live very long because the zoo keepers gave him his food and taught him tricks. he won't know how to catch food and won't know what food to and not to eat along w/ what other sea going creatures to avoid and get along w/!! They should have never captured any of those animals unless they plan to help the species multiply and reproduce but only w/ endagered and almost extinct!!!!!

I think it is really sad. I read an article saying he was mentally stable, but he killed other people before and wasn't listening to commands in an earlier show- so he wasn't stable. I'm not all that suprised though. Killer Whales in captivity have major issues. These are animals used to roaming vast miles of the ocean, and they are stuck in a little pond for people's amusement. In the wild, they are used to socializing with other Orcas on a daily basis, in captivity they don't get that stimulation. Their diet isn't even the same as what it should be. Lots of Sea World's whales have mental stability problems. Some go so mad they smash themselves into the walls of their tank. When one had a calf, she tried to drown her calf. Wild whales are used to living in pods for their whole life, but many of Sea World's whales get moved around every 3-10 years, that is not healthy for them. Basically, what I am trying to say, is that I'm not surprised this happened, and I imagine it is going to happen again in the future because whales are not animals that can be kept properly in captivity. I do think that this is a really sad situation, and I wish it would have never happened. My condolences to the trainer's family. I think that if the whale has killed before, he obviously isn't stable. I don't think he should be killed, but at the same time releasing him to the wild will be unsuccessful being that he has been in captivity for 30 years and has no whale social skills. I think they should just retire him, and let him be available for public viewing but not participate in any shows. Very sad situation indeed.

Any whale should NEVER be kept in captivity. How would you feel if all you ever saw were only two small rooms in your house, people staring at you, social isolation from others of your species, and doing ridiculous tricks in order to get your food? It's cruel and should be outlawed until it's fixed.

who ever told you killer whales live a hundred years is wrong, in the wild they normally live to be between 30-40. in captivity they normally live to be 20-30. I don't thnik that orcas have that bad of a life in captivity but I don't encourage people to just go out and start capturing them. I think that facilities like SeaWorld are a very good enviornment for these animals. I think that someplace shouldn't be allowed to have whales, but others give the whales a happy life. None of the whales are treated bad at SeaWorld and I think that whale was trying to play with his trainer but took it to far.

is it really the real Shamu that did it, too? i was shocked, wasnt shamu in like, Free Willy????

i think id be scared to work with animals like that, you'd be so susceptible to any type of danger. i think they should live out in the wild, it seems to me that Sea World is now all about the entertainment purposes for profit, instead of saving the animals and then putting them back in the wild.

in an ideal world, all wild animals would be free. but, we don't live in an ideal world. if people enter into an animals domain, they should not be surprised by the consequences.

It almost had a good lunch. Too bad people see dollar signs instead of compassion.
