Contrast is the range in difference from the lightest to the darkest points of a picture/drawing/painting, or it could be the difference between 2 objects or parts within a picture. So if you're doing a drawing, and you're told there is not enough contrast between the object and it's shadow, you would need to make a bigger difference in the color at the point where the shadow and the object meet. Another word often used is gradation. If you take a color and break it down from the absolute lightest a color could be to the darkest color it could be- you would be taking a look at the gradation of the color. For example you could start with white, then work your way through many shades of gray and end at black. The largest contrast you would have would be the white and the black.

I know it's not the most technical explanation, but I hope that helps!

There are 3 colors that make basic colors.
Yellow, Red, Blue

Contrast of Yellow + Red is Blue
that is Contrast of Orange is Blue and contrast of Blue is yellow.

Constrast of Red + Blue is Yellow
that is Contrast of Purple is Yellow and contrast of Yellow is Purple.

Contrast of Yellow + Blue is Red
that is Contrast of Green is Red and contrast of Red is Green.
Note that when you mix yellow and blue colors you get Green.
similarly for other mixings for + signs above.

In a nutshell the opposite of any color is its contrast.

For example contrast of white is black.
Similarly contrast of black is white.

Contrast of light shades is darker shades.
and vice versa.

There are some semi-contrasts that too are considered contrasts.

For example Light blue and Red.
Dark green and pink.
Dark Blue or navy and gray.
Light green and dark brown.

Thus combinations are many.
