You SHOULD leave him in there, yup. Are you using a plastic vacuum tube? That shouldn't be too invasive, and it would be far less stressful than catching him, putting him in a cup, and dumping him back in again, after.
Also, you have a filter, right? Just making sure, because if your 5 gal doesn't have a filter, you should be changing 80-90% of the water every coule days.
Kudos on not keeping your betta in a tiny bowl, by the way! :)

leave him in there, but make sure your new water is condtioned with the stuff to take care of chlorine and chlomine BEFORE you pour it into the tank. Also, poor it in slowly so your fish dosen't have to fight the rapids! Also make sure the water going in the tank is the same temp as the water coming out of the tank. The shock of a temp change could kill your fish!!! I'd let the water sit for a day before putting it in the tank! Good luck

You need to leave him in there! If you have a vaccum for your tank use that when changing the water. Taking your fish out of his tank will only stress him out more than if you left him in there. I have a Betta and he does get a little mad when I do a partial water change but he is very finicky. You should defiantly leave your fish in whenver you do partial water changes and do partial water changes every week, about 20% of the water.

I change my beta's water (1/3 fresh every week). I leave him in, and it doesn't seem to bother him any.

Yes, just make sure the water is the same temperature, and it would probably be best if you poured it in slowly, so it dosn't splash too much.

Leave him in there as long as the water you're putting in is about the same temp.

I think it might stress him out, since he'd see the water replacement as something invading his territory. I'd take him out and leave him somewhere quiet while I did the water replacement.
