Not quite.

The most over-rated piece of trash who ever walked this earth is actually my ex girlfriend Debbie.

No. That would be Dickens. Shakespeare was a pretty sharp dude. Despite it being barely comprehensible without a guide or a bit of education these days his plays are still studied his plays are still acted (spoofed even) and films have been made. Does anyone else have that accalaid? His only crime is he no longer gets paid!!

It looks like it's about 20 to 5 in favor of WS.

And the answerers are correct, of course. Anyone who can write a play for Leonardo DeCaprio 500 years before he was offered the script is not only a genius, but probably a time traveler.

Perhaps you ought to leave your question where late the sweet birds sang...

In what way is Shakespeare over-rated? Who are you comparing him to, Dan Brown? Or are you struggling with GCSE Romeo and Juliet?

Shakespeare is as important in literature today as he was centuries ago - his work had the foresight to discuss emotional, politcal, social themes that trancend time, unlike a lot of other writers whose work is hard for a modern reader to identify with. Even if you dislike tudor language or his style of writing, how you could every say that he is over rated or "trash" just shows how enormously ignorant you are.

I don't like the way he is misinterpreted to give meanings desired by pseudo-intellectuals: MacBeth is not corrupted by power; he is a pig who seeks power, and murder to him is the most gratifying of all desires. I interpret his famous speech about "life signifying nothing" to mean that anyone with that smug superiority will wind up a murderer because if life is meaningless, so is the taking of life.

So Shakespeare is like the New Testament in that he tells us nothing about life but is used by those who want to force their own delusions on us.

Are you a distinguished intellectual, able to make meaningful assessments of English literature from a deep knowledge of the works of literary giants like Shakespeare, and from personal experience of writing prose, admired by your peers and the general public? Oh, you're not... then don't make such assinine statements! (Or, as WS wrote, "Lord, what fools these mortals be." AMSD)

What a question!
Has Jelly B no culture at all?
WS is to be listened to and not read, so as best to appreciate the poetry of his words.
But apart from that he contributed over 1700 new words to the English language, which I, suspect, our friend Jelly uses all the time such as, lonely, fixture, madcap, torture to name but a few. He had the gift of changing nouns into verbs and verbs into adjectives.
Think kindly of this man, he is all around you.

His first five albums were OK though and did you see him at Live Aid my god what a show! err have you read any or seen a play or are you just posting a rather silly question to lose 5 points, no one person has added more words to the English language(except Bush) or created finer prose tragedies sonnets and comedies.

Did you read that one play about honor and betrayal? I forget the name of it, but it was pretty good. I think the hero had some tragic flaw though. You know the one I mean.

I am pretty sure you are thinking about Justin Timberlake. Shakespeare actually had talent.
