I'm from Barcelona so a no brainer for me. Just to be clear, in Barcelona, people speak both Spanish and Catalan and you won't have any problem if you only use Spanish (or even English depending on your job)
Barcelona has the sea and is really close to the pyrinees (mountains). Barcelona has more or less the same as Madrid in terms of a big city, no big differences in anything. Climate is better as its winter is milder and summer is pretty good. Pretty much same weather as in South California. Prices are comparable, with housing pretty expensive in both cities but with good and cheap public transport. You won't need a car in any of the two.
Madrid is a really cool city, but as I said Barcelona is my choice. If you're unsure just go to one and visit the other and then decide where you want to live in.
Good luck!

I lived in Madrid for 3 years, and the minute I set foot in Barcelona I was like Dammmit! Why didn't I move here instead...the plusses of Barcelona are that is has a creative artistic vibe, and it is near the ocean. Madrid is gorgeous too, I mean wow, but the spirit of barcelona is just cooler!

Definitely Barcelona for the climate and culture. I spent three months there, including time in December, January and August (coldest and hottest periods), and I never experienced any problems. I understand that Madrid has colder winters and warmer summers- yikes! In general though, Barcelona is just a funky city with lots to see and do. You'll NEVER get bored!

Both are good choices. Madrid is a bit better for doing business (or so I'm told), but Barcelona has the sea like someone already mentioned.
