Yes, I do think it can be a source of energy in the long term. The cost part needs to be cracked however. The most advanced research stems so far are trying to split water in a low energy way. Approaches are to do something tricky with plants (Who do this already for free) or use a tunned in laser.

No. Hydrogen is not free. You have to use energy to extract it from some compound its locked up in.
