I would like a horse for simple trail/pleasure riding. I'm older and have long put side the need for speed. I don't have a great deal of money, but enough for boarding fees. I do have a vast amount of love and care to give the mare or gelding I'm looking for. I also have many, many years of experience with horses. So, if you have one that you've thought about donating, sending to the auction, or something else, I hope you'll give this a thought. Thanks!

I do want him or her to be reasonably sound. With good ground manners.

Thanks folks. I do know about the rescue groups and support them as well. I was thinking perhaps to get a horse before being placed...but please, add groups you know of...it's always good to know who's out there I may have missed!

Have you checked with the local horse rescues? Many of them receive horses from people who don't want them anymore, or rescue them for the price of meat for auctions. There's nothing wrong with the majority of the horses, they're just not wanted any longer.

Also, there is an ongoing rescue to save the horses that have been used on Premarin farms. It's the first web addy in the list I've made below. The others are all in Michigan. They can probably refer you to others as well.

Adoption fees are typically low, but if it is beyond your budget, ask about being a foster home for a rescued horse. It's a truly wonderful experience.

Perhaps you could go to a local horse ranch an lease one out. Or look on petfinder. There are a lot of unwanted pets on there. I have seen horses on there that the adoption fee is waived, but they are usaully lame, so you cannot ride them. I bet you could find a nice one, for cheap.

Hi Suzette...I've noticed people placing ads for horses on Craigslist quite often. Here's the Michigan list: http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/mi Once you choose the closest town look for the pet section under the Community section. People post here every minute daily so be sure to check back often as well.
