Remeber that you always want to get all of the like terms on opposite sides of the equals sign. In this case you have "y" terms on both sides and numbers on both sides. Suppose that we want to get all of the y terms on the left, and all of the numbers on the right.

To get rid of the 4 on the left, we can subtract 4 from both sides:

12y + 4 - 4 = 8y - 12 - 4
12y = 8y - 16

To get rid of the 8y on the right, we can subtract 8y from both sides. Even though it contains a variable, we can still treat it like a number and perform operations on it as though it were a number:

12y - 8y = 8y - 8y - 16
4y = -16

Now we can solve for y. Divide both sides by 4 to get

y = -4

Check:

12(-4) + 4= 8(-4) - 12
-48 + 4 = -32 - 12
-44 = -44

It works!

Subtract 8y and 4 from both sides. Then you have 12y - 8y + 4 - 4 = 8y - 8y - 12 -4. You can simplify that to 4y = -16. Then divide both sides by 4, to get y = -4.

12y+4= 8y-12
12y-8y= -12-4
4y = -16
y= -4

First you put the numbers and the y(s) together. remember that when you shift over to the other side, the postive becomes negative and vice versa (:

12y+4=8y-12
get y on one side by subtracting 8y
4y+4=-12
get the non-variables on one side by subtracting 4
4y=-16
get y by itself on one side by dividing by 4
y=-4
Check:
12(-4)+4=8(-4)-12
-48+4=-32-12
-44=-44
Checks out!

12y+4=8Y-12
12y+4-4=8Y-12-4
12y=8y-16
12y-8y+8y-8y-16
4y=-16
4y/4=-16/4
y=-4

12 y + 4 = 8 y - 12

first you subtract 8 y from both sides
4 y + 4 = - 12

now you subtract 4 from both sides
4 y = - 16

now divide 4 from both sides
y = - 4

thats simple.

12y+4=8y-12
12y-8y=-12-4
4y=-16
y=-4

see?

you want to get all your variables to one side.

first, subtract 8y from both sides, giving you :

4y + 4 = -12

then, subtract 4 from both sides, giving you :

4y = -16

Then, divide both sides by 4, giving you

y = -4
