Please visit www.diabetes.org you can find a lot of good info here. Diabetes is a very serious disease if not treated. But it can be managed through diet and exercise, and insulin by pill or shot. She should do a home glucose test (can buy them at Wal-Mart and may be covered by health care plan) your dr can tell you what number is normal for your mom as it ranges from person to person. Normal blood sugar is 90-130 before eating. If your mom is overweight she can really help her sugar levels by beginning an exercise program (but always check with your Dr. before beginning an exercise program). Most diabetics should follow a diet specially designed for people with diabetes simply called "the diabetic diet" which is a system based on food exchanges. It is similar to the structure of the weight watchers diet but not the same foods. She should stay away from foods with refined sugars such as non diet soda, cookies, candy, etc. Breads and starchy foods turn to sugar which will also raise her sugar levels. Unmanaged, diabetes can cause a person to loose their eye sight, can cause kidney failure, stroke, heart disease, coma, and many other serious problems. Most hospitals, Dr. Offices, health departments, and other clinics provide patient education seminars or support groups. Most of the time they are free. Your local library may have patient education pamphlets or books to read more about diabetes.

There are many websites giving information on diabetes.A good one is http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/diabetes/.
My mum died very young from diabetes as she could not understand it.I do know someone who lived to a ripe old age of 95, so understanding what to eat and what medication to take is very important. Basically your mom should avoid fats and sugar.I don,t know how severe your mums diabetes is but a low glycomic index diet, (GI) diet will help sufferers.
