try defragmenting your computer - i've literally just done my computer 5 ins ago because mine was running slow too. click on the start button, then click on 'all programs', go to 'accessories' then click on 'system tools'. the option to defragment your computer will be there. also, u can get a free download from the internet that helps clear all the rubbish off your computer, its called Ccleaner (cr*p cleaner). if u put 'Ccleaner' into an internet search engine, i'm sure it'll take u to the right place. i clean my computer out on a regular basis - at least every other day. hope this helps.

Before you start ensure you have enough time to complete the defragmentation process, it can be anything from 30 mins up to several hours depending on how much use the PC has had since the last defrag was completed.

To start the defrag utility, click on the Start button, then hover your mouse over Programs, then hover over Accessories, then hover over System Tools, then click on Disk Defragmenter.

Windows 98/ME will now ask you which drive you wish to defrag, select the drive you want to defrag (usually C:) from the pull down menu and then click the OK button.

The Defrag utility will then start defragmenting the selected drive.

note: Sometimes the defrag utility will report that it can't defrag the selected drive because the drive has errors, if this is the case then run the Scandisk utility first, to start the Scandisk utility, click on the Start button, then hover your mouse over Programs, then hover over Accessories, then hover over System Tools, then click on Scandisk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once it is complete simply close the defrag utility.

As an idea, why don't you buy an external Hard drive?
I've just bought one from PC World for £80 which is Seagate 320gig, that's massive and will store more than you'll probably EVER need.
Just plugs in via USB and your away, get someone to buy it you for christmas.

To defrag it you need to go to system tools and then select defrag, choose the hard drive to defrag and let it do it on it's own. This probably won't speed your PC up most but getting and using a Spyware Scanner will. Get Ad-aware or Spybot from download.com .

If you're using Windows XP, click Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter. You might also check how much RAM you have and your processor speed. Right-click on My Computer and click Properties to find out.
Try cleaning out your old files by opening My Computer and right-clicking on your C: drive and clicking Properties. Then click on Disk Cleanup.
Finally, try clearing out your useless internet files. Click on Start-Control Panel-Internet Options and click on Delete under your browsing history.
If your computer's still running slow after all this, I can almost guarantee that you have some background programs running that are bogging you down. Look at the icons at the bottom-right of your screen, next to the time. Are there any programs you don't really have to have on right now? Also click Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on Task Manager. Here you can see exactly what's using your RAM under the Processes tab. You may even find some obvious stuff under the Applications tab.
Hope this helps!

you can defrag, it will take some time but it's a good idea.

you can also chose Disk Cleanup from the system tools menu which will also be a good start.

most pc's are slow due to adaware and malware, I suggest downloading from www.lavasoft.com, Adaware personal. It is free and it works really well..

Hitman Pro is a Dutch program which includes both Spybot etc., and Lavasoft Adaware and a few others. It is free. It takes my comp. about 2 hours to take all the unwanted things out, but I do it once a month and find it worth it. Then there's a Danish program Spamfighter, also free that helps to keep spam out. Both programs (I think, also use English text if you so choose)

i assume you are running windows. Then go to control panel, performance and maintenance, then click on the part that says re-arrange items .......

De fragment compacts the programs to make programs run faster.

Have you tried clearing out the Internet memory folder. this is the area which keeps a record of past visits just in case you want to return later. if this gets full it could be contributing to your slow computer.

Hope this helps.

You don't say what OS you're using, but if it's a very old one, your best bet is to back up everything you want to save, then get someone to completley wipe your hard drive and re-install your OS. Your computer will be like new ... for a month or two, at least!
