It is hilarious to me. Repubs' liberal wing influence their elected members to oppose a draft because that is their ideology, but those same liberals approve of the repubs courting of the conservative right in order to maintain the parties voter base.
The issue of reinstating the draft should not be partisan at all. There should be a study to determine if the military is not getting enough good recruits. If this is the case, then the draft should be reinstated. Period! The safety and welfare of our country is at stake. I was drafted and served 40 years ago. Even though I was hurt by this I do not feel the draft was wrong then and it still isn't wrong today. In fact, I would draft all at age 18 and upon graduating high school for two years minimum, use them as mail carriers, airport security, mail carriers and sorters, a government public work force, etc. After that period those with leadership potential or who otherwise desired could reenlist with paid incentives and the others could go to trade schools or college and actually be ready to learn and accept their roles as adults in our society.

Having been forced to participate in the last "Great Fiasco" by a military draft, I was ticked that the wealthy were able to get into phantom air guard units, jumping ahead of the poor on the lists, so they could get away with not even showing up to fulfill that light duty. As far as putting the draft power in the hands of one of these rich slacker idiots, I don't see any more upside for the regular guy than existed in the last resource war in Vietnam.

I don't think many people want a draft - Republican or Democrat.... The Vietnam War cured us of that... what those poor young men went through is horrible... I wouldn't ever want a draft unless is was completely necessary... and even then I would be skeptical about it... you are talking about sending young men, some straight out of high school to fight in a war with very little training... basically sending them over to die- who would want that for their fellow Americans

"fear"? That's a pretty ignorant statement, Chuckles.
We see no need for a draft. The all-volunteer military is a better, more capable, more motivated professional force and does a better job than if there were a forced conscription military twice its size.
Conscription is, first of all, not quite in keeping with this country's principles. Second, it doesn't give us a better military or keep us safer.
So why have something that would diminish our national security needs? It doesn't make any sense.

The Democrats fear the draft. A while back they started a rumor that President Bush was going to bring it back and there was such an outcry from these cowards. Now the idiot from New York is trying to bring it back to prove a point and all the Dems and Libs think it's such a great idea!! The party of hypocrisy has spoken again.

Yet another lost ignorant.
The majority of the military is Republican and most of us do not fear a draft.
Fact is Representative (Dem.) Charlie Rangle wanted to renew the draft in 2003 and is lobbying to do it again now that the Democrats have the House and Senate.
Bill Clinton dodged the draft and became a felon. He deserted his unit. Carter (DEM) was so gracious as to pardon him shortly after he became a Senator.
Your attempt at devils advocate has failed...and anyone agreeing with you is also ignorant.

Last I heard from Democrats, it was the Republicans who wanted to bring back the draft. That seemed to be part of the election rhetoric, at least.
Now they're afraid of it? Can't you make up your mind?
I don't think the draft is necessary. If all of our troops were sent out, none of them would be able to get any leave, as there would be no one to relieve them.

Republicans fear the draft because then their rich, privileged, white kids will be forced to fight with the poor, underprivileged kids who are forced to volunteer because they have no other choices in life.

Actually it was the Left wing that ran to Canada the last time there was a draft. The question should be:
Why do the Democrats want a draft that their own voters will flee from?
Dem. Charlie Rangle is the Representative proposing restarting the draft, if you didn't know.
