Acient Greek civilization is the very heart and soul of Western Civilization. They had a remarkable culture with outstanding philosophers, dramatists, sculptors, and pioneers in the scientific method. Unfortunately, modern Greece is not much of a contributor. This is largely because ancietn Greece was High Paganism, and modern Greece was infected by Christianity.

The Greeks are greatly over-rated when it comes to contributions to civilization. People like to credit them with things such as democracy, physics, mathematics, etc. While it is true that they contributed many great things to scientific thought and artistic tradition, they did not invent the fields themselves. Yes, they were great architects, but borrowed their techniques almost wholesale from earlier cultures (Egyptians, Mycenaeans, and near-eastern cultures), and never achieved the same level of engineering brilliance the Romans and other peoples did. Sure, democracy started in Athens, but Athens was ruled by tyrants through most of its history. Democracy was ultimately a failure there (pure democracy is as inviable as pure communism). Medicine? Not more so than many other cultures, such as the Egyptians, Chinese, and Incans. Astronomy? Again, other civilizations had highly advanced astronomical science, some more advanced than the Greeks. I'll grant that the Greeks were probably the most advanced physicians and mathematicians (so far as ancient civilizations go) in terms of abstract thought, but their philosophy was rivaled by Eastern scholars. I'm not trying to denigrate the Greeks, merely point out that they were not the originators of many of the things they are thought to be, nor did they take most of their technologies or thoughts to their ultimate conclussions. What I think of as their greatest achievement is the steam engine, but they never realised its potential and it remained a novelty (much like gun powder did in China). I love the Greeks, and they did many great things, but they should not be considered the originators of western civilization. If you really want to pin that down, which I don't think can be done, then look for the beginning of sedentary, agricultural centalized powers (and say "thank you" to Iraq while you're at it).
