When I heard about Pujols, I thought the same thing as Georgie Porgie... what a whiner he was, and how great Derek Jeter looks in comparison...
When the Yankees were winning their four world championships in the late 90s, the MVP awards went to the Texas Rangers (3 times) and the Oakland A's (once)... does Pujols think we need to take those MVP awards back?
If the CArdinals didn't play in such a sorry division, they couldn't have made the playoffs to begin with....it's not Ryan Howard's fault that the Mets ran away with the division this year...and, as someone pointed out earlier, the Phillies did have a better record than the Cardinals anyway...
Albert is a jerk, he needs to shut up...

Bottom line: He is complaining because he is a whiny crybaby.
You are exactly right...the Ryan Howard led the Phillies to more wins during the regular season. Therefore, he was more valuable to his team, even though they weren't lucky enough to play in the worst division in major league baseball, like the Cardinals do (they would have finished 3'rd or 4'th in every other division with their record).
Also, Pujols spent 3 weeks on the bench with an injury. I don't see how a player can be voted MVP when he can't even stay healthy for the entire season AND when he is outclassed and outperformed by another player on a team that won more games.
I always had respect for Albert, as a player and a class act. That is now gone. He is just another overpaid crybaby.

Without Howard the Phillies are nowhere near in the playoff hunt. The Phillies had a better record than the Cardinals! Pujols missed somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 games last season. How does he figure he got short changed? It sounds like jealously to me. He needs to grow up.

I was disappointed in Pujols' comment.and yes, they were out of line, and did not reflect well on him.
My hope is that he is not becoming a prima donna, as another person mentioned, referring to his comments about Gavine in the NLCS. He had pretty much an untarnished image prior to the playoffs this year, and was (is?) arguably the best player in the game, and one of the classiest.
As for his contention about the MVP coming only from a playoff team, even if I saw his point, he should not have been the one to voice it as it comes off as sour grapes.
For my own vote, I was torn between Howard and Pujols; you can make an easy case for either of them. Pujols is the better all-around player, and a better pure hitter, but Howard probably added more wins to his team this year....it's debatable.

Without question Albert is out of line. Is it just me or has he become a tad prima donna-ish lately? It's insulting to question whether Ryan Howard is the MVP or not. As it shows in the question, the Phillies won two more games than the Cards and Howard's numbers are monsterous. Maybe if he were healthy for the full year, his numbers might have been better than Howard's. The person who should really answer this question is Andre Dawson. I bet he could provide a good answer!

It is unfortunate that he made that statement. He'll learn from it. It's hard to believe that he's still only 26!
There may also be a part of him that feels cheated of this award, possibly at least twice (see Barry Bonds controversy - steriods).
Most veteran big leaguers know how to handle the press, as do many of the younger players. I don't feel that there's anything wrong with expressing his desire to win the award. It's not any different from any hall of fame candidate expressing a desire to get into the HOF. Both are rewards (one greater than the other).
The issue here is that he is *supposed* to tell the world how little awards mean to him and that the only thing that matters is the World Series.
Albert - you need to apologize for your honesty and adhere to the unwritten script because the press and alot of "fans" need something to keep them busy during the off season.

It's not just about the win percentage - if it were, then the wildcard thing would not exist and they'd just pick the top team in each league, or top two in case of a tie, which is what they used to do before expansion.
Pujols is not out of line. An (not A) MVP is just that - the Most Valuable Player. So Pujols is the Most Valuable Player because his team made the playoffs - without him it is most likely they WOULDN'T HAVE DONE SO.

Albert Pujols was both the best player in the NL and the MVP, but, he should be more intelligent(PC) and keep his mouth shut..
"Georgie>Pujols won the WS MVP" This is going to come as a real shock to David Eckstein

Guess winning the World Series was not enough. Pujols is a great player, but his comments are out of line. Maybe his true character just came out. Although disappointed, he should be happy for the other player. Like some others have said, maybe it cost him a substantial bonus. As athletes you do your best to win, but when you lose, be greatful and congratulate the winner. Then you try to win again and so forth. That is competition.

I agree with you 150%. The Cardinals had a worse record than the Red Sox (unfortunately the Red Sox still didn't make the playoffs), so he almost didn't make it. And as a huge Red Sox fan, and a huge fan of David Ortiz, I know that it doesn't have to come from a playoff team. David Ortiz led the AL in homers, how could you not go with Big Papi??? And in 2003, A-Rod won the AL MVP with Texas, and the Rangers were in last place. It shouldn't matter how your team does. It's not the MVT (Most Valuable Team), it's the MVP (Most Valuable Player).
