My truck manual says "use only MERCON ATF." My local (Bamberg, Germany) AAFES Car Care Center sold me Mobile ATF *transmission fluid,* said that was correct. They sell 3 different kinds of normal power steering fluid that all state will work in Fords.

The fluid spec is Mercon ATF
Most ATF is labeled Mercon / Dextron with a number after it. 3 is the standard oil and what is spec'ed for your car. 4 and 5 are synthetics and will work fine in there too but cost more.
Power steering fluid is one of the most overlooked fluids on a car. There is no filter in a power steering system and all the dirt settles to the lowest place, the steering rack and pinion. There is no factory recommended service interval for it either. Maybe that is why so many rack and pinion steering gears fail.
There is a procedure to flush the fluid and I do it on my vehicles regularly, every 30K.
You can go to www.bgprod.com and find a lot more info about this and the synthetic fluids that are available.

Use the ATF as the manual suggests. It is cheaper, and that steering system is designed for it.
