I know this is a girly answer but I like the lands of the Alliance better, so I like to play Alliance side. The Horde side lands are all kind of drab and brown.

Pros for the Horde: More interesting quest and more serious players. You're more likely to form a close knit group when playing the horde.
Cons for the Horde: Not as many players as on the Alliance side. I guess if you're planning to joke around on the Horde side, other people won't respond like in the Alliance.
Pros for the Alliance: More players, always will meet some new (possibly unrelible) player.
Cons for the Alliance: Much more immature players, crowded cities and serious lag.

Unless you're dead set on playing either a Paladin or a Shaman - the only two classes that aren't currently available to both sides - it really doesn't make much difference (and in the Expansion, those two classes are opening up as well). There are some minor differences as far as racial abilities, but usually not something big enough to base a decision around (the one possible exception would be if you want to play a Priest - Dwarven ones get Fear Ward, one of the more useful racials).
Generally speaking, Horde will have smaller numbers, and thus be a more tightly knit group - you'll know more people on sight, and be used to working with lots of them. Alliance will usually have a better selection in their auction houses, simply because there are so many more of them.
If you know what server you're going to be on, check out the stats for it - several sites have that info, try http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php

The horde seem to have more hardcore, serious players. Of course, this depends on the server. I play Alliance on one server and Horde on another and like both. I suggest playing both sides up to level 10 or so to get a feel for it. Even within each side, depending on what class you take and starting area (race) you can get vastly different experiences. Also only horde can do the Shaman class (very cool) and only Alliance (until expansion) can do Paladin class, so if either of those interest you that's something to consider.

Well i have found that the horde is more fun because people are not trying to live up to anything they are much more helpful and the quests are cooler and they alwys win in battlegrounds. the alliance on the other hand just suck.

Really it depends on the server. Especailly with burning crusades coming out and the only classes (shaman and paladin) that were unique to either side will now be avalible to both, it all depends on personal preference. If you want lots of PvP, go with the side that has lower numbers on your server. Otherwise, pick a race you like and go with it.
