I know how you feel! I have quite a few fish tanks, my largest being 55 gallons.
Pet stores often are not well informed and the poor fish do not have thier required tank size. It's sad because people think that because the pet store keeps them like that, that they can too.

As a former fish guy, I feel compelled to make this statement: GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE. Believe it or not, your 60 gallon (roughly 215 litres) tank is very overloaded even with one fish in it when compared to nature.
What many people do not know about fish stores, is that the tanks in there are purely holding tanks until that fish is sold. The fish you are buying are shipped in tiny bags and are kicked across the country by FedEx or whoever ships them. In truth if you care as strongly about the welfare of these animals as you imply, you wouldnt buy them at all and help put the salesmen out of business.
Believe it or not, I have sold fish, and I have several tanks. Fish stores are not purposefully mistreating the animals, and in fact want them to thrive because healthy animals make them money. So give everyone us a break and get off your high horse.

I am dissapointed in everyone who hates pet stores! I have worked in the same pe store for 6 years years. I am the head of the fish department and not a single one of my fish is unhappy or sick- if anything I get sick fish coming in! our tanks and fittings are designed and maintained by a standard that is set by the RSPCA. As pet Store we are under a strick code of practice which is set by the Pet Animal industry, This includes, tanks sizes, enivronments, feeding, chemicals, electrical devices (OHS) and the actually fish! If we don't follow these codes we can get in lots of trouble and/or can be fined, so before you say anything about the way pets store keep their animals ie fish. Ask them if they are a member of the Pet Association of Australia ( this is of course if you are in Australia- if not there is and Association in every country) if they are then you know they ae following the code- if not scream the roof, or whatever you want to do!!! But leave the people who are doing the right thing alone!!! Visit the site below If you don't believe me!

Petstores often leave a lot to be desired. Frankly, I don't understand how people view fish as so expendable. I mean, it wouldn't stand to have 30 kittens in a tiny room, with 5 dead ones on the floor and the others eating it, right?
However, SOME petstores are really devoted to their fish. You have to understand that petstores are temporary. They can't keep their fish perfectly (in the same way that cats for adoption each kept in small cages.) Someone once likened a petstore to a subway car. You wouldn't want to live in one, but you can handle it in small doses.
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with writing letters, speaking to managers, telling people who want to buy a common pleco that it "WILL grow to 18 inches" or when they want to buy a little pacu that is WILL grow to 36+ inches. Or when someone wants to buy a painted fish, that 90% of his friends were killed in the process of 'painting', that 8% more died on the way to the petstore, than that the fish they want to buy will probably die within a month.

I think all pet shops should be closed. Even poor animals in zoos are suffering especially the Orang Utans at Chester Zoo. The indoor section is just bare concrete and the animals look so depressed. We should only keep cats and dogs-nothing should be caged.

I cant say I'm here for the social. I dont take the time out of my day to read peoples profiles. I'm just not so interested in people...
Good to hear you have all them in a big tank though, and I hope you figure out your issues with your pH.
Edited 5 minutes later:
People thumbs me down... Wonder why I cant be bothered to socialize with them...?
