All major Canadian airports start with Y....kind of like a postal code.

At least Vancouver has VR after which kind of makes sense.

Other ones in canada make no sense whatsoever. Like Toronto, code is YYZ

As per the previous answer, "YVR" is the 3 letter IATA (International Air Transport Association) code for Vancouver International Airport. All airports (& airlines) have an IATA code & an ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) code. Fyi - the ICAO code for YVR is "CYVR". For airports, the IATA code is always 3 letters & the ICAO code is 4 letters.

The VR obviously stands for Vancouver.

I think they ran out of other prefixes and started handing out Y as the initial letters after a while.

Don't know specifically, but here's a link to a general "how airports get their codes" post.
